Sri Lanka is a genuinely year-round destination, but the island has two separate monsoons that hit opposite coasts at different times. Picking the right window for your route makes a real difference.
South & west coast
The southern beaches — Galle, Mirissa, Unawatuna — are at their best from roughly November to April, when the seas are calmest and the skies are clearest. This is also prime whale-watching season off Mirissa.
Hill country
The central highlands around Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Ella are pleasant most of the year, but January to March tends to bring the clearest mountain views. Pack a light layer — evenings get cool.
Cultural triangle
Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Anuradhapura sit in the dry zone and are comfortable to visit almost any month. Start early to beat both the heat and the crowds at Lion Rock.
If you want to combine coast, hills, and culture in one trip, the December-to-March window generally gives you the most reliable weather across all three.
