Rising 200 metres above the surrounding plains, Sigiriya’s Lion Rock is a 5th-century royal citadel and one of Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary sights.
Go early
Aim to be at the gate when it opens. You will beat the worst of the heat and the tour-bus crowds on the narrow staircases near the summit.
On the way up
Take your time at the landscaped water gardens, the mirror wall, and the famous frescoes of the “cloud maidens” tucked into a sheltered gallery.
The summit
The top holds the ruins of the royal palace and sweeping views across the dry-zone forest. Bring water and sun protection — there is little shade.
Nearby
Pair the climb with the Dambulla cave temples or the quieter Pidurangala rock, which offers the classic photo of Sigiriya itself.
