Many first-time visitors pack only for the beach and get caught out in the hills, where evenings can drop to a cool 10–15°C. A few thoughtful additions go a long way.
Layers
Bring a light fleece or jumper and a packable rain jacket. Mornings on viewpoints and the early train can be brisk and misty.
Footwear
Comfortable walking shoes for hikes and temple steps, plus sandals for the coast. Remember you will remove shoes at temples.
Sun & bugs
High-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent are essential year-round, especially on safari and near water.
Modest wear
Carry something to cover shoulders and knees for temple visits — a light scarf works well.
